Australia’s chief business body has defended its move to back an ambitious 2030 emissions reduction policy only three years after calling Labor’s 45 per cent target “economy wrecking”.

“I think the evidence has changed, the facts have changed, and I think we did two years of work about what could you actually do, but I do think things are very very different since 2018/2019.”

“A lot has changed since then - The US had pulled out of Paris and companies which we were talking to were very concerned about that target,” she said. “That really is a big, big impact on us because what we have to do lines up with the rest of the world.” "A 46 to 50 per cent emission reduction range is both pragmatic and ambitious," the council’s report said.
