Facebook experimented with giving 'power users' even more political news content

. The documents were first shared with The Wall Street Journal and subsequently provided to Insider and other news organizations.

"This new experience modifies the recommended-for-you News Tab feed to focus more heavily on trending and original hard news content from publishers you trust," the employee running the experiment wrote. When asked by a colleague to clarify what the new configuration would do, the employee said it would"skew content" in the direction of"political/hard news."

The existence of a hard news"power user" was identified, at least in part, through"shadow traffic," or traffic to a site that goes uncaptured due to ad blockers or other tools that stop user tracking. A company spokesperson declined to specify how else such users were identified. Through the experimental change, such prospective power users would see a new emphasis in news about"social issues,""politics,""business & finance," and"health & medical," according to an internal graph. Subjects like"education & learning,""animals & pets,""children & parenting," and"games & puzzles" would be de-emphasized for these users.
