WATCH | Klerksdorp construction company hires former gang members

For a while Klerksdorp has been known to be controlled by gangs. Residents lived in fear, and the unemployment level has increased yearly.

Companies have complained of extortion, accusing gang members of charging for protection. This usually led to disputes, halting progress in service delivery as entrepreneurs refused to continue with their businesses.A group of business individuals is trying to turn things around. They have employed community members, including those in gangs like Boko Haram and Al Qaeda, to build RDP houses in the area.However, it is creating jobs and slowly alleviating gangsterism.

The municipality says it hopes after the recent local government elections, changes in council won't affect the progress that’s been made.

The is nothing wrong hiring a former gang members.
