Leaked internal Amazon antitrust training warns employees not to call company a 'platform' or say it's 'dominating competitors'

Amazon tells employees to avoid words that may generate"unnecessary press or regulatory focus."Antitrust regulators have zeroed in on Amazon's Marketplace platform for special scrutiny.

In a mandatory annual training on legal and antitrust issues, employees are instructed to"be cautious" when using words like"platform,""ecosystem,""gateway," and"operating system," because they"are inaccurate, or may subject our businesses to misconceptions or unnecessary press or regulatory focus," according to a recording of the training obtained by Insider.

Employees should also avoid referring to markets by geographic area,"the European market" for example, because Amazon operates in a global marketplace, the training notes. The words 'European market'"could suggest from the FTC's point of view that we have a monopoly over the European market," the training says.
