Australia’s agriculture, mining and trucking industries could be ground to a halt next year due to a global shortage of an essential diesel exhaust fluid called AdBlue.

China is one of the largest producers of a chemical called urea which is used to make AdBlue and fertilisers but has stopped exporting it due to fertilisers prices in their own country skyrocketing.

Australia produces small amounts of urea but nowhere near enough to keep up with the demand and only has more than six weeks of supply left. The nation’s trucking industry will face serious problems if the production of urea is not boosted by early next year, making it a big issue heading into the election campaign.
