Starbucks workers at two locations in the Boston area want to unionize, days after the victory in Buffalo and a sign that attempts to organize at the coffee giant are spreading across the country

“We believe that this is the best way to contribute meaningfully to our partnership with the company,” two organizing committees representing the Boston-area Starbucks stores“We want to ensure that our voices are heard and that we have equal power to [effect] positive change for our store, district, and company,” they wrote in the letter.

Starbucks has said that stores across an entire market should weigh in on whether to join a union, not individual cafes as pursued by organizers with the Workers United Upstate New York. The company has pointed to its decision this fall to raise employee hourly pay, increase worker recruitment and improve cafe equipment.Joshua Bessex/Associated Press

“It was directly inspired by the Buffalo organizers,” Mr. Daguerre said. He said the Commonwealth Avenue Boston-area location had reached out on its own to Starbucks Workers United.The Boston workers’ letter shows attempts to organize at Starbucks stores are gaining momentum across the country. Workers United, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union, has been active on social media promoting the campaign through the Starbucks Workers United accounts.
