An overdose epidemic that has swept across North America is leading more cities to try to decriminalize small amounts of heroin, fentanyl, cocaine and other drugs

TORONTO—Canada’s largest city is the latest jurisdiction aiming to decriminalize drug possession as it faces a surging overdose epidemic.

Toronto’s board of health this month said it would seek permission from Canada’s federal government to allow drug users to carry small amounts of drugs for personal use, including heroin, fentanyl and cocaine, without fear of prosecution. The exemption wouldn’t cover drug trafficking, which would remain a criminal offense.

Highly addictive drugs are to be made legal?

heroin, fentanyl, cocaine with a vodka booster

Guessing they are clueless how drug tolerance works.

Make the vectors of addiction more available? Must be supported by big pharma.

If you legalize it you no longer track it as illegal activity I suppose.

More cities should adopt these plans. Who gets to pick the cities?

All personal amounts of any drug should be decriminalized (not necessarily legalized). Two of the deadliest drugs, alcohol and tobacco, are already freely sold.

Already the comments are filled with pure ignorance. Decriminalizing will help addicts find medical treatment for their addictions instead of giving them criminal records and tossing them into bloated prisons.

?

Sorry folks, fentanyl won !!

No correlation with white north american legs.

Most drugs should be legal in user amounts. Look at the great success we’ve had in making them illegal.

When it was focused just on the Black community all they could come up with is send addicts to Prison. Funny how things change

Don’t think that’s the right course of action tbh. Hard drugs are something else than weed, these things can kill you …

Hello this commies want this country to b 3rd world for fuck sakes. Use to get thrown in jail for a joint. Thank u all u joey voters

Oh, that will help with overdoses for sure

Fighting drug overdoses by flooding the streets with drugs, Fighting inflation by flooding the market with printed trillions and I get dirty looks for saying Merry Christmas...

My friend who had open heart surgery was not given enough painkillers because the hospital is so afraid of giving out drugs. Ever see a grown man clutching his chest at night crying from pain?

This is the exact opposite of what needs to happen. It will only create more users, and make our streets more dangerous. Look at the cities that have already done this like LA. People don’t feel safe to walk outside anymore. Decriminalize weed maybe, but heroin? Cmon….

I wonder white... Err I mean why.

Rediculious....

America did not show this type of compassion when entire communities were being criminalized by the police & politicians for weed. fentanyl really hit a nerve with America now.

I didn’t know the founding fathers ment life liberty and the pursuit of free drugs

Right this is a major problem because it’s affecting white people but ignored when it’s black and brown people foh

This is absolutely ridiculous. Because they can’t address an issue and fix a problem, they’re going to legalize it.

The war on drugs was a disaster so being “tough on drugs and crime” didn’t work. So it’s time to try to help these people then just throwing them in prison with overly harsh sentences.

can we start with weed first? jesus christ

This is like more pouring water over someone who’s drowning.

The question is...why people choose/need/want/like to use drugs Why don't we focus on that?

Maybe we get real rehab, mental health treatments instead of shams and the ability for addicts to afford them.

This is the end result of twenty years of economic depression and wars, constant political drama by these partisan jerks holding office and a pandemic made worse by politics. We won’t go into the opioid crisis caused by our drug industry.

Opioid addiction is here to stay. The approach of legalizing heroin & having heroin provided by the government at a clinic may greatly reduce OD and exposure to fentanyl. If the gov't takes over the heroin trade it also will cut out the cartels.

Los Angeles has de facto decriminalized drug use, as it’s open on the streets. I witness people using, mostly meth, every day in Hollywood. I also see regular theft in my stores by obvious addicts. How does decriminalization address addiction’s impact on nonaddicts?

Now that young, white kids are victims of drug addiction, suddenly we need to decriminalize these drugs, when criminality around certain drugs, like weed even, was initially intended to imprison brown & black people, as a way to keep minority populations in check, demonize them.

Too little too late

yep let them figure out how to feed their own face

How does making it more easily accessible stop overdoses? Everything is so bass ackwards.

There is a good idea. Make it easier to overdose.

decriminalize small amounts of destructive drugs? The decline of the USA

Are they also planning on freeing all the black ppl that are locked up for small amounts of weed? Plus, where was this sympathy during the crack era?

Good
