A large-scale search is underway off the coast of St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape for a fisherman who reportedly went overboard from the local fishing vessel on Tuesday night.

The spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute, Craig Lambinon, says their St Francis crew was activated just after 20:00 and were joined by NSRI craft from Jeffrey’s Bay and Oyster Bay.

Lambinon says the police and Transnet Port Authorities were also activated and joined the search. The search continues and includes shoreline patrols. “MRCC, the NSRI emergency operations centre and the local NSRI duty controllers are assisting to plot search patterns. The South African Maritime Safety Authority is assisting the police in investigating this case. Aircraft flying in the area have been requested to keep a look-out. Telkom Maritime radio services are broadcasting marine VHF traffic alerts requesting vessels to keep a look-out. Lifeguards in the area have been tasked to do patrols.
