Editorial: We can admire much about China, but not its authoritarian instincts

China’s president Xi Jinping is the most entrenched leader of the party-state since Mao Zedong

When Hong Kong returned to China in 1997, its residents retained many of the freedoms they had accumulated during 150 years of British colonial governance. Among the most cherished was freedom of assembly and expression. Being able to think and say what was on their minds, privately and in public, came to define for Hong Kong’s people the concept of “one country, two systems” under which Beijing promised to govern them.
