The Restaurants Association of South Africa (RASA) has thanked President Cyril Ramaphosa and Cabinet for lifting the curfew ahead of New Year celebrations.

Gatherings are now restricted to no more than 1 000 people indoors and 2 000 people outdoors.

Alcohol establishments that have licences to operate beyond 11 pm will revert back to full licence conditions. RASA CEO, Wendy Alberts says: “The industry is absolutely delighted with the lifting of the curfew. It has been well received by all the restaurants and I think it shows support and collaboration between government and the public sector. It’s a reward for the way South Africans have managed the 4th wave so responsibly. We all want to open up the economy, we want to protect livelihoods.

Is this act of lifting curfew not LONG OVERDUE, we are but a flock of sheep being led in the dark by government who forbid the sale of slip slops last year when we were locked down! Seriously?

Creating CHAOS indeed!!! Our people don't know their limits...drinking and driving is going to skyrocket, not to mention all the casualties hospitals will experience. I feel for the medics...BAD DECISION!!!

Poor President was left with no choice but to accede, for he has compromised his control by not wearing a mask on the International TV in 🇬🇭 when dancing with tha old lady. Consequently thereafter contracted the Virus, so armchair critics were looking on and now cornering him.

We have a government that can put all sorts in place yet fails dismally to enforce these things! So no covid at clubs after midnight I suppose..SA Government laughable at best!

Guys Minister of Zol, is addressing the nation midday. Hope she dont change wat Ramas changed.

This announcement couldn't have come sooner. New year's eve is one of the most important periods for the tourism, hospitality, restaurants, entertainment and informal trading sector. These businesses need every hour of trading to survive and prosper.

Either there has been no need for a lockdown all along, or celebrating the New Year is more important than saving lives. Or the coronavirus is very understanding. 🤔

They've lifted the curfew because of the 8th of Jan, Polokwane
