Trades can solve the Blue Jays’ problems when baseball is back in business. Replace Marcus Semien. Fill out the rotation. Their best options are likely on someone else’s roster. Good thing they have plenty to offer in return. Opinion by GregorChisholm

went into effect, but there is still a lot of heavy lifting to get done before opening day.

Teams are prohibited from making moves that affect their 40-man roster until a new collective agreement is reached with the Major League Baseball Players Association. Once the shutdown is lifted, there should be a flurry of moves as the league rushes to complete its unfinished business. For now, Atkins can use the downtime to assess the work that has already been done and what decisions lie ahead for a team that intends to contend in 2022. The Jays’ best shot at acquiring an impact infielder is through trade. Cleveland’s José Ramírez and Oakland’s Matt Chapman continue to be logical fits, while Arizona’s Ketel Marte would be an option for second if the Jays are content with Cavan Biggio and Santiago Espinal at third. The Jays’ needs in the rotation aren’t as glaring as they were in November, but they would still benefit from another proven starter.
