The Dow Jones Industrial Average swept to a record close on Monday as upbeat investors bought stocks in the first session of trade in 2022. The Dow [S: DJIA] advanced about 246 point points, or 0.7%, sweeping to a record finish near 36,585. The S&P 500 index [S: SPX] added about 0.
6%, to also close at a record near 4,796, while the Nasdaq Composite Index [S:COMP] finished 1.2% higher, edging closer to record territory. The tone on Wall Street was mostly optimistic to kick off the new year, despite big gains for equities in 2021 and snarled holiday travel at airports due to surging COVID-19 cases and winter storms. To cap off 2021, the S&P 500 soared 26.9%, beating both the Nasdaq's 21.4% rise and the Dow's 18.7% climb.
