Independent political candidate Allegra Spender was a director of her mother’s fashion business, Carla Zampatti Pty Ltd, when it failed to abide by a federal law requiring disclosure about its treatment of women.

“Why companies are still not compliant with the act is a mystery to me,” said Jan Edwards, a gender diversity consultant. “This is not new legislation. The agency is not new.”A spokesman for Ms Spender’s campaign said the breach was an inadvertent mistake caused when an employee went on maternity leave and their replacement did not know the report had to be filed.
