Looking ahead, Releford's only wish for Black founders to know that despite the beauty boom, there's still room for them in the skincare space. Robinson ran the platform for just over a decade, and during that time, both friends and family talked to him about starting his own brand. At first, he brushed the idea off, thinking to himself, "Who needs another beauty brand?" Then he started researching vitamin C skincare technology.
At first, Price didn't realize her products were filling a void in the market. "When I started the brand in 1993, I was natural and I knew a lot of naturals," she says. "I knew that we were not the norm, but I knew we were out there and at first, I felt there just wasn't enough variety. What existed all had a certain look, feel, message, scent, package, etc. It lacked fun and whimsy.
