Shoplifting appears to be on the rise at grocery stores in Canada as a growing number of supermarkets report an increase in thefts of food and pharmacy products.It’s unclear whether the uptick in theft is due to escalating inflation, a growing resale market for stolen goods or other factors.
He says retailers often ask suspects to leave the store and not return – rather than involve police – leaving official data on the issue lacking. Retail Council of Canada spokesperson Michelle Wasylyshen says theft impacts retailers in multiple ways, the biggest being the loss of inventory.

Imagine a wealthy country which exists in relative post scarcity where some people can only survive by stealing basic food and medicine, or by paying others to take the risks for them. What if, and hear me out here, people were not desperate for food and medicine?
When the cost of living increases as real wages decrease, over decades and decades, shoplifting food becomes a non-crime, and the social murder perpetuated on those victims by the wealthy and aided by the state (should) become the focus. If you see a shoplifter, look away.
