Customers have been given until Feb. 22 to switch over to Brinks or lose some functionality. AT&T isn’t saying much about what happens after that.

The AT&T headquarters are at the heart of the new AT&T Discovery District and it's large media wall in downtown Dallas, Tuesday, April 20, 2021.Dallas-based AT&T is winding down its Digital Life home security service for customers this month, marking the beginning of the end for a business AT&T has run for almost a decade.

In an email sent to customers mid-November, the company gave them until Feb. 22 to decide whether to switch to Brinks. After Feb. 22, remaining Digital Life customers will lose significant functionality for their home security systems. Without 3G to communicate on, the system will rely on a home broadband connection, AT&T told customers. That means that during a power outage or loss of home internet, the Digital Life system will not be able to send alarm signals to dispatch police, medical or fire officials.

According to Brinks, Digital Life customers who move over to its service will pay the same monthly fees and receive installation of Brinks equipment “with some expanded capabilities.” But some Digital Life equipment won’t be compatible with Brinks’ service, and Brinks said it may charge customers for certain devices.

The wind-down of AT&T’s Digital Life comes as CEO John Stankey is in the process of stripping away parts of the business, including its media operations, and focusing in on the company’s core communications offerings.
