Six mobile companies have been approved by Icasa to participate in the long-awaited spectrum process.

File: Satellite dishes and cellphone towers atop a roof of a building.JOHANNESBURG - The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa has announced the names of qualifying bidders to participate in the auctioning of spectrum.

The announcement follows years of lobbying from telecommunications firms and various civic organisations for ICASA to issue the high-demand spectrum.For years, operators have called for spectrum licences to lower data costs and meet the increasing demand for data. ICASA says the March 2022 spectrum auction is a milestone in South Africa's communications history as it will be the first-ever spectrum auction.
