A Mobile city councilman is questioning cruise terminal spending when Carnival Cruise Line is returning to the city with a ship for only a short stay, and with a contract set to expire in November.

It also comes with new scrutiny from a Mobile city council member who, on Tuesday, questioned public expenditures related to cruising.

Jones said the expenditures should be questioned at a time when Carnival Cruise Line, the Miami-based cruising giant, is returning to Mobile with a cruise ship for only a short stay and with a contract set to expire in November. Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy informed Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson earlier this month that cruising will be halted from the cruise terminal effective October 15, and that cruising will not take place for 11 months. The Carnival Ecstasy, a sister ship to Carnival Sensation, will be the vessel arriving to Alabama for the cruising restart and it will sail for seven months before leaving the company’s fleet this fall.

Council President C.J. Small, also on Tuesday, asked whether the city’s administration was planning to host events and generate revenue inside the downtown venue while cruising was not taking place.

This would be the second time Carnival will get the better deal at the expense of the citizens.
