The Portfolio Committee at Home Affairs says more time is needed to finalise theThe Bill aims to change the Electoral Act to allow citizens to stand for election in National, Parliament and Provincial legislatures.
The Constitutional Court in 2020 found that the Electoral Act of 1998 is unconstitutional, and gave Parliament two years to change the Electoral Act.The Portfolio Committee held a public hearing on the Bill at Thohoyandou in Limpopo on Monday. Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee, Mosa Chabane, says they need an extension as they have just started with public hearings.
“The Constitutional court gave us a judgment to complete this task on June this year, we have noticed that we are not going to meet the deadline and we have taken a decision to approach the Constitutional Court to ask the Parliament to do that process.” Chabane adds: “This process is going to be intense because we have to consult all stakeholders. We must take the report to National Assembly after National Assembly must be considered in NCOP, is not going to be terms of our resort.”
