Why? Because, McDonald told, the “Australian on the street” doesn’t like where plant-based products that resemble meat are “sitting on the supermarket shelves”. That’s why this government – which has been known to present itself as on the side of freedom – should tell Woolworths, Coles and IGAs how and where they may display their products.
Except that really, this has nothing to do with what the Australian on the street is supposedly saying. It has everything to do with fear of losing sales, in the way that the dairy industry has already lost a significant share of its sales toAlthough sales of plant-based meat alternatives are, at present, a tiny fraction of those of meat made from the flesh of dead animals, Woolworths has reported 40 per cent year-on-year growth for the plant-based protein sector.
McDonald’s report also wants to regulate labelling. Perhaps, like Texas legislators, she wants to ban the use of the word “meat” from being used to label anything that does not come from the carcass of a dead animal. But a glance at the Oxford English Dictionary shows that the original use of the word “meat” meant “Food in general; anything used as nourishment for men or animals; usually, solid food, in contradistinction to drink.
Nor is there any evidence that supermarket shoppers are being misled into buying plant-based meat, thinking that they are getting animal flesh. After submissions about the placement and labelling of plant-based meat products were made to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the Commission said that, in each case in which a submission was made, it did not believe that a court would find the labelling likely to mislead consumers.
Australian politicians are urging their government to tell supermarkets where to place vegan alternatives, PeterSinger reports . The move is one example of AnimalAgriculture groups worldwide pushing for bans that target PlantBased producers.👇
As long as the dead plant ‘meat’ is very clearly labeled as such who cares. My partner actually did accidentally purchase this stuff, we’re on a budget so stung but we tried it anyway - we didn't like it so it cost us 2 days of nice meals.
Need health warnings on some meat products ?
Why are you publishing work by an ableist, eugenicist philosopher?
Need to re-label plant based food. It is not meat. I still find funny that vegetarians don't like to eat meat which is all good but still need the taste kick of meat 😂
why do they always need to use a meat term.. meat industry not scsred just truth in advertising
The meat industry never fear. I’ll never buy imitation
Everyone should eat real animal sausages...they are good for you, good for profits and a Grade A carcinogen. thescience
There is no such thing as plant-based meat. The so-called original use of the word is irrelevant. Garbage article from a known flog.
