Capetonians have been urged to make use of alternative transportation on Thursday, 24 March after CATA and CODETA taxi associations confirmed that they will not operate.

Commuters have been urged to make use of alternative transportation on Thursday, 24 March after two of Cape Towns’ main taxi associations confirmed that they will not operate.

According to the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association’s Secretary-General, Mandla Hermanus about two thousand taxi operators from CATA and the Congress of Democratic Taxi Association will be marching to the office of the Premier to present a set of grievances regarding the impoundments of taxis, unfair requirements for releasing impounded vehicles as well as other issues affecting the taxi industry.

“Taxis will depart from Nyanga and Khayelitsha at 7 am, and a march will commence at 10:30 am from District Six. A memorandum will be submitted to the Premier’s office at 11:30,” Hermanus said.Gershon Geyer, a spokesperson for the South African National Taxi Council further indicated that the associations had applied for permission to march and they had been granted the certificate and as such, they will proceed with a peaceful march tomorrow.

“They also made a decision that none of their vehicles will be operating tomorrow. Cata and Codeta gave Santaco the assurance that there will be no interference and intimidation of the other regions that will be operating as per normal. All other transport services will continue as per normal, Geyer said.
