from many in Australia’s technology and innovation sector to the government’s pre-election budget will have come as a surprise to some within the Coalition, but zero enthusiasm is a fitting response from an industry that has been largely ignored or patronised by prime ministers for the best part of a decade.

Turnbull was right, though. He had judged correctly that the pervading global trend towards mega-growth tech disruptors was here, and that technological innovation offered the best hope for jobs and GDP growth in the post-mining-boom era. The innovation portfolio, and the government’s engagement with the local tech sector, has been almost invisible ever since.
