The announcement signals the completion of a significant step towards Qualcomm’s efforts to become a major supplier of auto technology for the future vehicle platforms, especially for electric vehicles (EVs) and Autonomous Vehicles (AVs).

In addition to Qualcomm’s leadership position in future telematics and infotainment systems, the company has announced relationships with several major automotive OEMs, including BMW, GM/Cruise and Ferrari, for ADAS/AD platforms.

In this race to provide a complete hardware and software platform, Qualcomm is competing with solutions from the likes of Intel/Mobileye, NXP, Nvidia, and Renesas, as well as in-house systems like Tesla’s. Qualcomm’s unique position, however, is its ability to leverage the company’s expertise in developing low-power, high-performance computing, connectivity, and AI solutions in mobile devices – a must have in the world of electric, battery powered, 5G connected vehicles.
