Alberta weighs in on federal budget
The new fiscal plan includes $2.6 billion over the next five years for companies to invest in CCUS projects. “In particular, this budget lacks a plan to boost business investment and long-term competitiveness in Canada,” Toews said in a statement late Thursday. Under the current system, banks do not have to use OBSI, opting instead to resolve customer complaints through for-profit resolution services. “OBSI has long argued that a competitive dispute resolution model leads consumers to reasonably question the impartiality and independence of the system,” the ombudsman said in a statement. “This perception of conflict of interest can undermine public confidence in the financial sector. The only way to improve consumer confidence is to remove ombudsman competition and establish a single, independent, not-for-profit ombudsman dedicated to the public interest.
Ottawa first earmarked $30 billion over five years in its 2021 budget with a target of $10-a-day child care by 2025-26 across the country.
