General Motors and Honda aim to build an electric vehicle that costs less than $30,000. A modular battery system will help.

that they would be developing a new kind of electric car: an affordable one. The two companies have a plan for an EV that will be sold into the millions of units around the world beginning in 2027. The modular architecture of the planned sub-$30,000 EV will allow it to be sold in multiple variants, including the ever-popular compact crossover SUV.

Here’s what to know about the battery tech, the planned new vehicle, and how much EVs tend to cost today. One of the major benefits to the Ultium platform, as it compares to other types of battery electric vehicle power cells, is its modularity. Ultium cells can be packaged vertically or horizontally, giving engineers flexibility in designing a battery pack to fit the available space in a vehicle.

But by far, the biggest benefit to a pouch-style Ultium battery pack is that it simply costs less to manufacture. General Motors has been selling mainstream vehicles with electric battery packs for over a decade. When the first Chevrolet Volts left the assembly line in 2010, its series hybrid battery pack cost GM over $1,000 per kilowatt hour of storage capacity.

And go 100km before charging unless u buy the option for extra batteries.

Battery configurations need to be standardized based on vehicle class so that they can be easily repaired or replaced no matter the vehicle manufacturer.

But all the cobalt needed for the batteries won't help the poor people being exploited to mine it.

Um doesn't the Leaf cost less than $30k?

$30,000 to buy, $25,000 to repair

Mass production 2060, Tesla will be there in two years. Is it over the air upgradable? Is it upgradable to self driving? Tesla is! Does it have its own charging network? A fantastic warranty? Is it the safest vehicle on the road? Tesla is! Prototypes are easy.

Base $30000 and 100km range. If you want more range, it will go up exponentially for more 🔋

I don't think golf carts cost $30k. A street legal golf cart would work for a lot of people.

All EV's that are not gas cars turned into EV's have modular batteries. I have a 2012 Leaf (over a decade old) & the entire battery drops out the bottom & can be replaced very easily. EV battery modularity is not new.

Hope it's true. We keep getting told cheaper options for cars and houses are coming thanks to great, cheap new technologies. Yet when they're actually offered, they're unaffordable. Why? Because they're trying to squeeze as many $$$ as they can out of buyers.

Well yeah, if you can build a 'Standard' battery system that can fit in multiple vehicles then yes the price drops a lot... Side note to the Greenies.... EV are not the Saviour of the planet.... So you can put your Virtue Signaling away.

I am a lowly Maint Tech and I have an idea for a battery change system. Quick stop setting. Guide vehicle in place. Begin process. All underground. Battery access panel under car! Robotic, safe, 5 minute battery change. Designing on paper. Time to mainstream E.V.'s. Anyone there?

$30k...so that's affordable for the average blue collar?

Sounds like there designs are flawed, and if they cut to much cost the product will be crap long time to wait while no wants to buy the old poison cars 🧐

They are dreamin

GM already has an EV for 30k...

🤣 🪦 Yea, keep trying. I’ve never paid over 8k for a car. Which means they still need to reduce that cost by half so poor ppl can afford it on the SECOND HAND market. Jesus, I miss Saturn.

Too late

The EV is not the Saviour, when it comes to Climate Change. Just curious, where does the Energy come from to charge these cars? Being solar and wind account for about 15% of energy creation? That's right, you guessed it. Coal and Gas plants, with a side of Nuclear.

What is the current trend for lithium price?

They're already relatively affordable when accounting for fuel/maintenance. This will make them outright cheap (for a vehicle).

Oh how I pray modular standardized battery configurations can be a thing. Have them certified in a similar way that motor oil is API certified.

Finally? I already know of a great EV available now that’s less than $30K. BCBrownell
