During the pandemic, new players from young families to locked-out gym rats flocked to a niche outdoor sport that was free to play on most courses. Now, disc golf faces a problem: it's too popular for its own good.

The most famous shot in the history of disc golf was thrown in Ogden, Utah, on June 26, 2021.

It's a niche sport that mimics traditional golf but is played with special airborne discs that differ from typical Frisbees, and has blossomed into a real business with a cult following during the pandemic. With that increased demand comes new problems to solve, and the problems fly in from all directions.

Manufacturers are in a daily fight to find more plastic than they have ever ordered at a time when the polyurethane used in most discs is in high demand, including for medical equipment such as face masks, leading to historic inventory lows.Disc-golf companies are paying more than $20,000 for shipping containers that formerly cost $5,000 to haul branded metal baskets from China, only to have them stuck for months at the Port of Los Angeles.
