An American wind energy company has admitted to killing at least 150 bald and golden eagles, most of which were fatally struck by wind turbine blades, federal prosecutors said.

The MBTA prohibits killing, capturing or transporting protected migratory bird species without a permit.

As part of a plea agreement, ESI was sentenced to more than $8 million in fines and restitution and five years of probation. The company has also agreed to implement up to $27 million in measures to minimize future eagle injuries and deaths, the prosecutors said without detailing what that would entail.Prosecutors said ESI will pay $29,623 for each bald or golden eagle killed by its turbine blades in the future.

Martinbosma_pvv Lets safe the world 🤣

We want green

I don't think I believe this

Hopefully there are color, sound & design adaptations that can be made to mitigate fatalities! It’s very sad yet 150 over an 8 year period doesn’t seem to be an unusually large number given the number of birds lost even yearly from encounters with airplanes and tall structures.

ESI can continue killing eagles for $30,000 per dead bird. And pass the cost to the consumer.

seems odd

Here’s the other side of that conversation: wind turbines, more of them, will help to prevent climate change that could eventually kill ALL life on the planet. Me, I’ll take the Darwinian thinning of the flock in exchange for all of us living, including the birds.

That 35 million will be paid for by consumers via higher prices. Anyway, how are they going to stop birds from flying into the turbine blades? The blades don’t go chasing after the birds. Even green energy exacts its environmental price.

hbdchick What are the feds going to with that $35 million

pegobry Does France have a national bird?

The province of Groningen in the Netherlands and energy company RWE are investigating whether painting a wind turbine blade black will help reduce the number of bird victims.

Martinbosma_pvv Als er 1 korenwolf wordt gestoord in zn winterslaap leggen ze een hele nieuwbouw stil, en hier over hoor je niks. Beetje hypocriet.

deray And how many are killed by the pollution emitted from power plants?

deray '...warned that there was an “unusually high number” of golden-eagle nests in the area and discouraged the build, noting that up to 44 golden eagles and 23 bald eagles could collide with a turbine blade within the first five years. ESI moved forward with the build...'

Remind me how many animals been killed by the burning of fosil fuels?

Nothing Green About It.

tastes like chicken

Painting one blade of each turbine black has been shown to radically cut bird deaths. Why isn't this done as a matter of normal practice?

First they need to go after people with windows on their buildings and cat owners...both kill vastly more endangered birds than wind turbines

That's $233,333 per bird. How about spending that much on Homeless Veterans?

To be fair they should watch where they are going rather than being like look at me watching my dinner from 200m up..... bang. Field mouse laughs 'not today my friend, not today' See saving lives too 😉

Is there anything that can be done to deter this from happening?

Do eagles get sucked into airplane engines?

Evolution will sort this one out. Dumb ones fly into blades, smart ones will not.

Did the Birds get Cancer too?

So Trump was right?

Why some company must pay for birds stupidity?

This is on par with what’s happening in Ukraine. Great reporting.

Blame it on Biden

When questioned about these killings, the wind energy company responded: 'Just to be clear, we're their biggest fan.'

We have the technology to fix this issue by making a dyson style wind termin instead of the old method of using large eagle killing blades. We need your help elonmusk

WaPo, suddenly very worried about appearing “both sides” these days. Fossil fuels have caused FAR more damage — via pipelines, oil spills, polluted air & waterways, ice cap melting, wildfires…

Now do the number lost from wildfires caused by climate-change-induced earth warming over the same period. And can we talk about the climate-change-induced suffering of these beautiful creatures?

How many birds does coal kill?

Can almost hear Donald jumping to his gout-ridden feet and flapping his arms around like Grimace at this news… 🤦🏼‍♂️

The money would be far better utilised in finding a solution to birds being hit by the blades of these turbines.

Oh noooo....

Damn it don’t show this to trump. Will end up being the new right wing talking point against green energy.

Trump was right again.

Remember, sometimes silence is the best answer

Just weeding out the dumb ones and bringing a more advanced genetic pool to the future

Oh no one have considered this angle in green power. Let us take corrective action by protecting the area by mesh.

Is this an attempt to make us forget about the catastrophic loss of wildlife during the BP oil spill?

Thank the Lord it wasn't cancer

I wonder how many eagles will die when fossil fuels ruin the entire planet?

How many birds do skyscrapers kill?

Now GQPs who love coal and oil are gonna run with this one.
