SINGAPORE — Finance Minister Lawrence Wong on Thursday called it a "privilege" to be called upon to lead the People's Action Party fourth-generation team, shortly after the decision was announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong."I am humbled and grateful for the trust and confidence of my colleagues, who have chosen me to lead them. I am also deeply grateful for the support of my fellow MPs," said Wong in a Facebook post.
Speaking about the multi-ministry COVID-19 taskforce's efforts to combat COVID-19 in Singapore, the MTF co-chair noted that "colleagues in the 4G leadership have stood shoulder to shoulder with each other" to combat the pandemic. "But as we have been reminded many times, the right to lead cannot be inherited. Together with the rest of the 4G team, I will continue to serve Singaporeans wholeheartedly, and strive to earn the trust and support of each and every one of our fellow citizens."
Former minister and People's Action Party Chairman Khaw Boon Wan was asked by Lee to start a process involving the ministers, as well as Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin and NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng on the leadership succession.
