Officials with the Northlight Theatre hope to return home to downtown Evanston and construct a new performing arts building, pictured in this rendering. The Evanston City Council voted at its April 11, 2022 meeting to look to give Northlight $2 million towards is return and construction efforts.
“I think we can sell Northlight on the direct economic benefits, but I want to talk about the halo effect. The indirect benefits that we are going to see in downtown with the increased vitality and vibrancy … are going to have ripple effects,” he said. Evanston would provide $2 million to Northlight, pulling the money from the State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds and from the city’s American Rescue Program Act funds provided by the federal government for pandemic relief.
“This is the worst exercise of local government that I’ve seen thus far,” said Peter Braithwaite, 2nd Ward, referring to Reid’s pushback. “It’s embarrassing. We have had so many months of conversations around this issue, to pull this in the last minute is insulting.”Interim City Manager Kelly Gandurski assured the council that she will negotiate the agreement with Northlight Theatre to make sure all parties are protected.
