PNC opens new tech hub in Farmers Branch for 200 workers following BBVA merger

Brendan McGuire, North Texas regional president at PNC, came to the region about five years ago to help build the bank's presence. Last year, PNC completed its acquisition of Houston-based BBVA, which McGuire said accelerated its growth in the region by five years.Pittsburgh-based PNC is opening its fourth U.S. tech hub in North Texas, another sign that it plans to invest in the region following its merger with Houston-based BBVA USA in 2021.

This comes after PNC integrated BBVA with its bank in October, something that “pulled our growth forward in Texas and in North Texas by at least five years,” McGuire said. Before that, in late 2020, PNC struck a partnership deal with the Dallas Stars and American Airlines Center that led to Victory Plaza outside the arena being renamed PNC Plaza.

McGuire declined to say how many employees the bank has in the region, but said it is “quickly becoming a top-five market for PNC nationally.” The company’s workforce totals 59,426 across the U.S.,Much of the tech team that spans systems architecture, user experience and cybersecurity is now working remotely, especially after the pandemic, or at a small office in Las Colinas. McGuire said he hopes the tech hub will bring people back together.

The products the tech team works on include Low Cash Mode, a feature rolled out last year that alerts customers if they are going to overdraw their accounts and lets them fix that before being charged. Customers have avoided over $50 million in overdraft fees since its inception, he said. PNC’s tech team comes up with solutions that help the bank stay competitive and ensure the survival of the industry, McGuire said. The bank, with more than $550 billion in assets, spends over $2 billion on tech annually.

PNC gained 2.6 million BBVA customers with the merger and fewer than 1% of them experienced this issue, PNC previously told“Sometimes you don’t know what those issues will be until you flip the switch, and it’s game day,” he said. “There were some issues. We worked through them.”
