Addressing homelessness and housing challenges in Toronto requires investment from all levels of government. The result of the province ignoring Toronto city council’s requests for support is costing people their lives. Opinion by m_layton

On any given night in Toronto, close to 10,000 people are experiencing homelessness, and Thursday’s provincial budget announcement did nothing to help the problem. Instead, thousands are left living in emergency shelters and parks, or spending the night in hospital emergency rooms.

Despite all of this troubling data and information, the provincial government released a proposed budget on April 28 that fails to provide any funding for much-needed housing initiatives and homelessness interventions. We know that providing quality, safe and affordable housing is the right way to help people out of chronic homelessness. Not only is it the compassionate and obvious option to improve the health and social and economic status of an individual, it is also the most economical solution for the city as a whole.

m_layton All levels of govt, means no level of govt. Thus thousands on the streets of your city and country. To has more homeless in its least 'homeless' block, than Stockholm for instance in its entirety. Once they were upset they found 65.

m_layton The province didn’t cause Sherbourne and Dundas. That’s 100% the city.

m_layton How many private condo units has the city approved in the past few years? I count 18 condo developments just on Yonge from Bloor to Davisville. Much of that is Ward 11…

m_layton Most of them have mental issues and the homeless are around 10 000 in Ontario alone, any given night, and growing. Also, the waiting list for housing surpasses 20 000. Its homeless Canada.
