University of Sydney Professor Hans Hendrischke says there are “three main reasons” behind a 70 per cent drop in Chinese investment in Australia.

Professor Hans Hendrischke says there are “three main reasons” behind a 70 per cent drop in Chinese investment in Australia.

Prof Hendrischke said the three reasons are: China’s implementation of currency export restrictions on overseas investments, the general screening of Chinese investments, and Australia’s political relationship with China. He said the third reason is “more closer to home” but is probably not conducive to new investment “even at a small scale”.

“These are the three broad reasons that have brought Chinese investment down from the peak we had in 2016 and 2017,” Prof Hendrischke told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
