Bureau says it wants to protect Canadians from higher prices, worse service.

The Rogers and Shaw applications are pictured on a cellphone in Ottawa on Monday, May 9, 2022. The Competition Bureau says is seeking to block Rogers Communications Inc.'s proposed $26-billion acquisition of Shaw Communications Inc.

The merger will lead to "higher prices, poorer service quality and fewer choices," the bureau said, particularly in the wireless sector, where Rogers, Bell and Telus Corp. currently serve about 87 per cent of Canadian subscribers. He and the bureau argue that Shaw has "consistently challenged" the Big Three telecommunications companies.Rogers plan to buy Shaw for $26B sparks concern about competition, pricesRogers Communications has signed a deal to buy Shaw Communications for $26 billion pending approval from the Competition Bureau of Canada, the CRTC and the Canadian government. The deal has raised fears that reduced competition will push Canadians' cellphone bills even higher.

He thinks there will be a number of things Rogers can do to address the bureau's concerns and push the deal forward. Vass Bednar is the executive director of McMaster University's Master of Public Policy in Digital Society Program.

The bureau was responsible for taking away free cell phones. Please, no more.

The government needs to stop allowing all companies from getting so big there is no competition. Start by banning lobbyist’s.

If they do this, then let American companies come to Canada, I’m sure ATT Verizon TMobile would love to come up here

The CRTC needs to start giving licenses to smaller companies. In North Frontenac, there is one internet/phone/cable provider for the entire region. They're upgrading to fibre optic, but in the meantime, we all have zero services, and no other options.

Just imagine: if the CRTCeng actually did their fucking job, instead of being run by corrupt industry assholes dedicated to enriching themselves and their pals, there wouldn’t even be any need for a Competiton Bureau.

Open up cell and internet to international company’s that will be true competition

Protect us from higher gas prices too not just this one

How could it be any worse?

So, another broken Trudeau promise! The prices have gone up NOT down. Just more lies from Trudeau!

Hahaha good luck

Finally, someone has some sense. The crtc wasn't there to help us.

Just nationalize these damn telecoms. They charge crazy amounts of money, rule the market with an iron fist, provide horrible service, and leave rural, northern, and indigenous communities behind. Communication is a need in the 21st century, it should be accessible to all

To bad they couldn’t do the same thing for gasoline

Canadians can already have higher prices and worse service - just sign up with Bell.

Flood the market with US carriers please.

Is the bureau talking about government?

We have a competition bureau which allegedly is supposed to serve in the interest of Canadians? What the fuck have they been doing all this time

Rogers and Shaw to argue “false! It can’t possibly get more expensive and the service can’t possibly be any worse!”

Good. Nothing good can come from this takeover for consumers.

Report the real news pfizerdocuments

Unfortunately this block won't do anything for competition. There is no competition in Canada when it comes to internet, cable and cell phone services. The three major companies in Canada control everything and are sucking us dry. I thought JustinTrudeau made a campaign process?

This must be a new mandate.

Define worse.

Theater...

I hope they don't let Bell off the hook.

News for competition bureau it is already too late, we are already victims of price fixing, price gouging and bad service in cellphone and internet.

Does this mean Sportsnet Now app will be fixed too? 🗑
