It’s probably not a good idea for important platforms to be in the business of frequently banning users for life.

and impose upon it his version of free speech, speculation swirled about whether he would let Donald Trump, the ultimate Twitter scofflaw, return to the platform. Well, the suspense is over. On Tuesday, Musk confirmed what most people suspected, announcing at aconference that he would “reverse the permanent ban” of the former president’s account. Trump, you will recall, got

If anything, deleting tweets that are “wrong and bad” suggests a broader, more easily abused standard of content moderation than Twitter currently deploys. The most likely explanation for Musk’s conflicting statements is that he’s simply making this up as he goes and has not given any serious thought to how content rules should work on the social platform that he’s trying to spend $44 billion to buy. And yet, buried in Musk’s free-speech word salad is a crouton of wisdom worth chewing on.

“I think permanent bans can be really harmful,” says Evelyn Douek, a doctoral candidate at Harvard Law School who studies content moderation. “And in some ways, they’re going to be more harmful for the average user than for a really powerful politician who is always going to be able to get their message out.”that he won’t return to Twitter even if reinstated, and will instead use his own Twitter-clone platform, Truth Social. OK, sure.

'With great power comes great responsibility' Trump was very irresponsible w/his tweets, and encouraged the attack on the Capitol. As a POTUS, he should be held to a higher standard than the rest of us. Lifetime ban should stand.

No. This is a bad take. “That isn’t Twitter’s problem to solve.” Real Tragedy of the Commons Energy.

Freedom of speech DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU CAN JUST SAY ANYTHING THAT YOU WANT TO SAY TO OTHERS...OR...ABOUT OTHERS...NOR DOES IT MEAN THAT YOU CAN LIE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC ABOUT ANYTHING.

Nope. Some people you have to jettison

Yeah, but I gotta swallow all those soggy croutons and rancid salad dressing to get to it

Thoughtful piece, but I’m not sure I’m persuaded by it. Even if some kind of sliding scale suspension was the approach, what TFG was serious enough to justify a pretty dam long suspension.

Don’t go political Wired, its looks bad on you.

If you don't shut someone down for advocating the violent overthrow of the government, then what would it take?

Ask Russian citizens why they are fighting in Ukraine. Then you Will see what would happen in America if truth and facts didn’t matter any longer. I’m glad the former guy is gone. Good riddance

Some wisdom? The guy played twitter and the deep state like a fiddle, my fucking Hero

Alas, I remember the days when Wired wasn't shitlib dumpster fire

someone's hungry

Twitter's vision statement to be the world's most diverse and inclusive company. The company considers that to achieve this goal, it is key to serving the public conversation. Nothing about being a platform to incite and instigate anarchy, death and destruction.

If words are harmless, made by people who can do no harm, sure. Trump and others like him, whose words cause harm to others, incite actions that would harm others. There is no place for such evil.

I disagree.

Sure unban the leading insurrectionist for 'philosophical' reasons.

Will all banned accounts come back?

Idiots

Twitter cut Trump off after he incited a riot. Seems like the classic yelling fire in a crowded theater argument

Wired is really working hard to take CNN’s title of most useless and propagandized outlet.

Hahaha no. He tried to stage a coup and overthrow our government and used fascist hate mongering to do it. The best time to delete this article was before you posted it. The second best time is right now.

I’m an old granny Democrat from Arkansas and I agree.

Anyone who has ever run an online communication platform will tell you that the pareto principal applies to moderation 20% of your users will generate 80% of your moderation activities 5% will be like half of them That population lives to skirt the rules, to behave the worst..

I want the old free twitter back where you could do anything!!

No one likes croutons, Wired.

Is freedom of speech really that alien to everyone. It isn’t like he said he would ban all liberals in fact all he said is he wanted to piss off 10% most radical of both sides. If your views can’t survive free speech then they shouldn’t survive

Is wired turning more center after they realize all the woke shit was bots? Crazy

elonmusk does not have a point. He has money.

Excuse me, but a permanent ban is **required** for people who commit the highest crime of a country and spread falsehoods. Margery Taylor Green and Lauren Boebert are next.

Don't defend free speech define 'dangerous speech.' And then tell us what the penalty is for an unwillingness to discontinue 'dangerous speech.'

Many things can feel like a life sentence. For instance, listening to someone lie and people complaining about the said lies ... EVERY FUCKING DAY.

Add Wired to the Elon stanboy club.

Is that Alfred Hitchcock?

Hey Wired?

He already said he doesn’t want to come back right? He’s got his own echo chamber / social network now…

Maybe they should only ban people for life WHO ATTEMPT TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

unfollowed.

Trump says he doesn’t want to come back and created his own version of Twitter that directly contradicts the improvements made to curtail misinformation. He broke the rules multiple times, why the fuck should he or anyone get another chance? No. Bad take.

I feel dumber after reading that. 🙄

'Come on guys! I was just joking about using your platform to try and overthrow one of the world's oldest democracies in favor of my oligarch master.....friends, Renee my 1at ammendment on a privately owned platform reeee'

As POTUS, homeboy seriously talked about drinking bleach and using light to cure Covid as tens of thousands were literally dying and almost overthrew the lawful government because he was a sore loser. He's insanely lucky to only be walking away with a lifetime Twitter ban. smdh

Treason should carry a life sentence.

bold move, wired

Like using Twitter to communicate to insurrectionists. Yes that's fine.
