Maritime Industry Australia CEO Teresa Lloyd says the industry has finally gotten the “attention that it deserves”, after Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce committed a re-elected Coalition government to boosting Australia’s merchant navy.

Currently Australia’s commercial fleet boasts 13 large scale vessels which is expected to fall to nine vessels by 2024. “We’ve had an unprecedented number of issues affect the industry, one after another and in combination,” Ms Lloyd told Sky News host Peta Credlin. “We’ve had the COVID crisis, we had a ship grounding in the Suez Canal, we had the rail line severed by the flood between the east coast and the west coast and of course now we have the terrible war in Ukraine.”
