Former Ontario finance minister Charles Sousa, left, and Conservative candidate in the last federal election Michael Ras are considering to run in the yet to be scheduled by-election in the GTA riding of Mississauga-Lakeshore.The story link will be added automatically.
Spengemann was first elected to the House in 2015 by a margin of six per cent of the votes when he bested then-incumbent one term Conservative MP Stella Ambler. He was re-elected in 2019 by a margin of 11 per cent, and in 2021 by six per cent. He’s stepped down only eight months after the last federal election.
“It’s not so much the risk of losing, it’s what do I do, and what contributions can I make if I go forward,” said Sousa. “And that’s what I want to determine, how comfortable am I like, there’s a lot of work that needs to be done. There’s a lot of committees, a lot of initiatives, and I have to be prepared to do that and do my civic duty. And it is a calling, it is a service, it is a privilege, but it requires your devotion and your commitment and obligation.
The provincial and federal riding boundaries are almost the same in Ontario. In last week’s election, the PC candidate in Mississauga-Lakeshore, Rudy Cuzetto, was re-elected with 45 per cent of the vote and Liberal Party’s Elizabeth Mendes came in second place with 36.7 per cent of the vote. The NDP’s Julia Kole carried 8.5 per cent and Green’s David Zeni ended up with only five per cent of the vote.
