It’s a good thing Doug Ford and Justin Trudeau have learned to get along so well together over the past couple of years.
“Both of us sat back and reviewed everything that we got done together,” Ford told reporters on Friday. “And there’s so much that unites us.” Ford didn’t win in Ontario by campaigning against vaccine mandates, the Bank of Canada or the World Economic Forum — the pillars right now of Pierre Poilievre’s campaign. Ford didn’t even win by campaigning against Trudeau. On the very eve of the Ontario election campaign, the prime minister and premier took their road show to Windsor, to make a big announcement around the future of the auto industry. So far, moreover, Ford has not shared any public stage with Conservative leadership contenders.
If Ford and Trudeau are going to be the political leaders defining the middle ground in Canada for years to come, here’s the question then: Should federal Conservatives be looking for someone to do the same? Trudeau, on the other hand, is continuing to reap the benefits of a working alliance between his government and Jagmeet Singh’s New Democrats. He, too, gets to govern while his chief rivals are locked in a leadership race.
