Over 1 000 workers’ jobs are now hanging in the balance. The National Union of Metal Workers is set to meet on Thursday to map a way forward.Almost 1 200 workers are at risk of losing their jobs and we are concerned for workers because this is not the ideal outcome. After entering into business rescue, Comair was able to start flying again when the Comair Rescue Consortium invested R500 million for a 99% share of the equity in the company.Last Tuesday, Comair announced the suspension and grounding of its flights, which contributed 40% to the local aviation market, due to a lack of funding, which led to its financial crisis.

Its debt burden, however, did not start during the Covid-19 pandemic. Comair’s purchase of Boeing 737 Max planes is partly to blame. The airline paid $45 million in deposits for eight of the planes.
