A group representing Canadian ranchers says their industry has been unfairly singled out by proposed new regulations that would require packaged ground beef to be sold with a health warning label.

The Canadian Cattlemen's Association is crying foul over a proposal by Health Canada to introduce mandatory front-of-package nutrition labelling for pre-packaged foods high in sodium, sugar and saturated fat.

Dennis Laycraft, executive vice-president of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association, said his industry can't understand why its product is being “vilified.” He said Canadians consume approximately half of their calories from nutrient-poor ultra-processed foods, but by contrast, ground beef - while undeniably a source of saturated fat - is also a nutrient-dense protein that contains iron, zinc, and vitamin B12.

Front-of-package nutrition labels exist in many countries around the globe. For example, Chile recently introduced a mandatory warning label on foods high in calories, sugars, sodium or saturated fat. The U.K. has a voluntary “traffic light” system that uses colours to convey a ranking for total fat, saturated fat, sugars and salt in a food.

Charlebois said he's particularly concerned that the Health Canada push is coming at a time when consumers are facing rampant inflation and record-high prices at grocery stores. According to CCA figures, 50 per cent of beef produced in Canada is exported. In 2021, Canada exported more than 500,000 tonnes of beef valued at $4.47 billion. Laycraft said he worries that if Canada is alone in placing a health warning label on its beef, Canadian ranchers and beef processors will be at a competitive disadvantage.

And so they should

Red meat being labelled as bad is just meme science.

Think it's bad now? Wait until the Feds mandate climate change warnings on food packaging. Keep playing along people, and you're going to be eating crickets in no time.

drifter1944 They should be pushing back against the packing plants that are vilifying their product. Soon no one will be be able to afford to buy it. Many farmers have gone out of beef but packing plants have huge feedlots pushing out more ranchers and farmers.

Me too.

CherylH23302949 Get to know your local farmers. Seek them out. We get 1/2 cow and 1/2 pig every two years for much cheaper than stores and the meat is incredible. Plus we pay no tax…all cash. We get all our farm fresh eggs from them too. Every time I can avoid paying tax, I do.

This is definitely what we need. Cow, dairy, pig, and chicken are staples in our society. Political attempts to limit the amount we choose is authoritarianism

Gertrud29409036 Isn’t that just something how Health Canada is picking on the farmers, yet it’s okay to force millions of Canadians to take a covid vaccine that did not have the list of ingredients in the package!?

Good

FoodProfessor Just more government bureaucracy out of touch with realty.

You know everyone at Health Canada is bbqing right now with the most expensive meats, at Tax Payers expense of course

FoodProfessor

Good

puckyou1977 We know beef is good and meat from a lab is bad.

If the Government now permits small amounts of cocaine and other dark drugs then what can a burger do to us?

SharonT20519250 Its so obvious what they are trying to do and so wrong.

War on beef in US/Canada. Yet not in most other countries.

FoodProfessor Humanity didn't get to this point by avoiding red meat.

FoodProfessor Good!! Tell the government to piss off and worry about spending less and fixing all the real problems…. Like borders, airports, passports, military spending, Liberal corruption…. Etc etc! TrudeauIsDestroyingCanada cdnpoli

Eat bugs. Tastes like pooh but you will save the planet.

Unless there are additives, meat should be exempt from the health labels like all other natural foods. Otherwise, they should all have it so that people can be more aware of what they're eating.

I ate eggs, cheese, sugar and butter when health Canada said they were not good for you. No cholesterol, heart or issues. Everything in moderation and that includes red meat, it is your body, you know what is good for you and what is not…. please think for yourself

I enjoy the taste of beef, but it isn't necessarily the best food choice for personal health or for the environment.

Good

Nobody can afford it now !

Humans have been eating meat for millennia-the ranchers r correct. Health Canada should be vilifying sugar, food dyes and vegetable fats (omega 6)and ban this garbage-companies r literally killing ppl with these poisons. The “food” companies and big pharma work together.

So health Canada, which hasn't done anything for Canadians besides become a dictatorial state is telling people what to eat?Excuse me,but people have been eating meat for years.

of course they will...

Truth is beef is terrible for health don't eat it read the sticker.

it should come with the same labels that cigarettes have! WHO stated, after over 700+ studies, that ground beef causes cancer to the same level as a cigarettes. Meat should have cancer warning labels. Shame on our govt for subsidizing this cancer causing industry GovCanHealth

Health Canada has no respect .

NOM NOM NOM….❤️❤️

Beef is one of the healthiest foods you can eat

It’s only for the rich now anyway so who cares

What the Truderp Government wants you to eat:

Sorry, Health Canaderp! I'm sticking to what I love eating most.

They would rather have people eat grounded up bugs like in the UK.

Haven't eaten meat for a few years now. Didn't start sooner 'cause I thought it would be hard to do. Wasn't. There are so many veg options available now. Just got my iron levels tested and they're fine. It's definitely not for everyone though. Eat what you want ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

l like my T-Bone steaks medium rare .

Let’s protect the dairy industry and screw western beef producers.

As they should

Okay but those disgusting cheap tubes of ground beef are nothing but fat and people need to know.

GovCanHealth going after western culture? Food producers? Canadians choices including Halal ?

And they should. Pasture raised beef is good for the environment allowing for biodiversity and soil regeneration. Red meat is delicious and liver is the most nutrient packed powerhouse food available. As a T2D starchy veggies and sugary fruits are a death sentence. reverohealth

Government bureaucrats keeping themselves busy 🙄🙄

go vegan...

Health Canada is trudeaus little lapdog!

I support PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals).

Just a heads up if the feds start trying to make is eat bugs instead of beef I'll start hunting. I'm not eating bugs.

If you eat animal products and support animal ag u basically have no right to whine about anything..climate, enviro, pandemics, healthcare costs.
