Jumbo floating restaurant, a once famed but financially struggling Hong Kong tourist attraction, sank in the South China Sea after being towed away from the city, according to its parent company

It capsized yesterday near the Paracel Islands after it"encountered adverse conditions" and began to take on water, Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises announced in a statement.

Operator Melco International Development said last month the business had not been profitable since 2013 and cumulative losses had exceeded HK$100 million . The restaurant set off shortly before noon last Tuesday from the southern Hong Kong Island typhoon shelter where it had sat for nearly half a century.

A deliberate act to save cost of maintenance maybe? Anyway it’s forever gone, just like other symbols that made Hong Kong once thrived. Credit: AhTo_comic

Hong Kong is a floating restaurant sinking into the sea.

Weirdly symbolic of Hong Kong's fate now that the Chinese government have taken full control. Glad I got to visit Jumbo, it was a great place.

Very sad

Yeah for British insurance lol
