With few companies on the ASX, it’s best to buy global via ETFs, listed investment companies or managed funds.

nvestment time-frame, risk tolerance and investor type are the main factors when choosing how to buy infrastructure funds or stocks.

Investors who want active management in listed infrastructure companies should use managed funds. Australia has some terrific asset managers in this asset class. Although infrastructure options vary, there are common themes. Most investors should use a fund rather than invest directly in infrastructure stocks. And they should invest globally: there’s not nearly enough choice in local listed infrastructure.Currency risk is another consideration when investing globally. Using an unhedged infrastructure fund against currency movements adds a layer of risk. To eliminate currency risk, use a hedged infrastructure fund.

Other top performers include the Atlas Infrastructure Australian Feeder Fund and Infrastructure Partners Investment Fund Core. Maple-Brown Abbott, Ausbil and Macquarie Group also have infrastructure funds ranked in the top 10 over one year. The firm’s Core Infrastructure Fund returned 9.8 per cent to end-June 2022, well above its benchmark index, and has outperformed since inception.
