No wonder it recently announced a new Witcher game.

paints a grim picture for CD Projekt: the company's value has cratered by over 75% since just before the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. A business that once boasted a market capitalisation of over 40 billion Polish złoty—briefly becoming theIn the weeks leading up to Cyberpunk's launch, CDP shares were trading at around zł400 each, hittingonly 6 days before the game's release.

In simpler terms, this basically means that the reception of Cyberpunk 2077 and CDP's subsequent firefighting of the problems has shorn off 5 years' of the company's overall value. This is despite Cyberpunk 2077 selling almost 14 million copies in 2020 alone. Ever since launch the developer has been largely focused on fixing problems with the game : and the multiplayer mode that was once promised is now not happening.

The company's post-Cyberpunk plummet has left its market cap trending around a level equivalent to its value in 2017. While it's probably to be expected that a game company's value would drop a bit after their much-hyped game finally released, the dizzying scale of CDP's fall can hardly be interpreted as anything but a result of Cyberpunk's mismanagement.

Perhaps more galling for CDP is the possibility that they are no longer Poland's biggest game studio. Business Insider Poland draws on some maths done by Puls Biznesu, a Polish business daily, to suggest that Techland might now be Poland's biggest game company by market cap.

It's not the end of the world for CDP: the company still sits comfortably in the WIG20 index of the 20 biggest companies on the Warsaw stock exchange. In 2017, CDP was still in the afterglow of The Witcher 3's release, and had only released its last DLC a year prior. Returning to a 2017-era market cap, then, doesn't mean CDP is on the verge of shutting up shop, but it does show that what's happened with Cyberpunk has hurt the studio.

Cyberpunk 2077 is nothing short of a fantastic game. Sure it had a lot of funny bugs and some optimization issues initially but that doesn't take away from the gem that it is.. A lot of people are saying it's bad when they've never even played it..

It's too bad because the current version is a phenomenal game. It's buggy, we know. Heard it over and over. But today, it's fantastic even with its quirks.

It's been a year, we know.

Their stock was hugely inflated prior to cyberpunks release, this doesn’t really mean much.

bad game put in the bin already

Hm, this article basically claims CP2077 directly responsible for the the plummeting of the stock. That’s kind of ignorant considering the overall state of the world economy and markets. No malice intended just a big detail to leave out.

Bold statement. 🤣

So what you’re saying is their stock is a steal and a great time to buy, which is hardly cyberpunk’s fault considering it’s fallen 50% in the last 3 months

“Hey guys. I heard Cyberpunk ain’t doin so hot.”

I’ve got half way through I love the environment, I’ve seen online the stories really short but its got so much potential.

Posted by Internet Explorer

Wait, a quarter of the price? Hmmmm 👀

Fuck that. It’s an amazing game.

The botched launch was a result of a huge crunch that affected the dev team. I hope this serves as a lesson that longer working hours doesn't mean more job getting done. Games success is based on the creativity of the team, not their productivity only.

Please…. Go cry on your 5,000 computer

I tried playing the game, and my first introduction was some clunky car driving, got bored after about 15 mins. never went back.

Cyberpunk 2077 is great on PC. But modders have give it a lot of additional content and bug fixes. Can't speak for console.

Microsoft or Sony be like:

Maybe, but I still love that game

I’ve been enjoying the game recently.. finally getting around to a serious play-through, PS5. Its not perfect and it’s definitely not what they were selling but it’s still enjoyable. Trophy farming rn at ~50hrs

Outside of trying to get my character laid, this game was boring

So much fucking wasted potential

It was ok. The city was cool just a little shallow on the outside of missions. Inside side and main mission the story I find to he too sad and intense with no good outcome.

This is very sad considering this is one of the most revolutionary and marking games in recent years, and also one of the most popular games on Twitch.

While the game has it's flaws it's not beyond repair, CD Projekt dug their own grave by trying to out-Ubisoft Ubisoft with the marketing and quality assurance, now they're paying the price.

That's greed for ya. Game plays great now btw.

Sony didn’t stick the landing with its PS5

What shifty executives and stupid marketing ideas do ti a project and a company is horrible

You get what you deserve

It did, its a banger game

we know…

It sold 13 million copies on launch. Fairly sure it stuck the landing.

shouldn’t have kept hyping up a broken game 😞

Game is worth 10 bucks at best 🤷‍♂️ then again I didn't expect much as I don't like the witcher games either they just don't make good games imo.

Pc gamers hate boner for cyberpunk 2077 is absolutely insane

I dunno. I liked it

Good.

Except the whole market has been fucked for months now? Every stock has been on a downward spiral.

No duh. Do you have like no real news to share?

This is not due to the game itself. Stop trying to make it look like it is. The stock market overall is down, and that’s the reason.

It needs different controls. Smoother

too bad cause it's actually a great game just mismanaged development

I been replay this game, and there are pretty much no glitches now.

Let it go ffs.

It's a stunning game. Just a shame that many people jumped on the hate train. Easily a top 5 game of the 2010's

I still really like the game. I'll probably play through it again in the near future.

Enjoyed Cyberpunk2077 more than TheWitcher3. Really should finish Witcher 3 someday though.

Oof, but goes to show how stock prices are all made up anyways

Didn't you post this story 5 days ago when it came out.

I remember when they looked down on Skyrim and Dragon Age. 'It's generic, I can't remember any character, our game looks better'. When you get cocky, life will make you humble again.

I mean, it was obvious from the previews that even if the game hadn't been broken the writing was gonna stink, but good luck telling the CDPR cult about that one

It's not a bad game but it's definitely no Witcher...

It's too bad because I've played it a few times now on PC and it's been fun. The story is decent and if you do all the side missions etc there is a lot there. Yes it has some issues but nothing has ever been game breaking for me.

No shit

Tis a shame. The game was fantastic on my PC since day 1 and I enjoyed the entire game. I wish everyone could have had the same experience but it is what it is

I think it’s a phenomenal game and I played it on release (on pc). Im sure the stock will soar with The Witcher 4

BitterQuitter and probably deservedly so

UE5 will be a game changer for cyberpunk 2.

Hopefully they learn from thier mistake! The game is incredible on my PC... But it's no doubt the horrible management hurt them! CDPR next game better not be like this!

It's unfortunate because playing 1.5 on PC, the game is actually amazing. If they'd launched it like this, it would've been an unqualified success, I think. The recent uptrend in positive reviews implies they've started to fix the right things.

Hopefully Witcher 4 will have a better launch than Cyberpunk 2077 did

Yeah Its pretty safe to say now after all the smoke has cleared...CD Project Red absolutely Fucked it up.

Damn bruh!! I bet management wishes they would have listened to the devs and delayed the game a whole year!!

I heard the game got cleaned up. I guess it still couldn’t live up to the hype.

Who cares?

It's odd, but I don't have CDPR stock, yet my entire portfolio is close to a quarter what it was before Cyberpunk released. It's almost like CDPR tanked the entire stock market. Or maybe something else did that... weird huh?

i never had problems with the game until they updated it, then bugs started. Its amazing but sad release

you cannot spell CD Projekt without REKT 😎

I don’t understand why the gaming media is so biased. During Covid every company lost some of its value. Sony lost 20m in stocks after activism on blizzard acquisition news. Every company somehow lost their value.

They deserve a lot of shit for all the lies that were told with this, shipping out such a busted product on top of that is even worse. I don't know if I want to spend my money on any of their shit going forward.

I love this game and want DLC, so this is not good news.

Its a shame too because so much love went into the game but people are stuck on 'game bad'

Imagine what Cyberpunk could've been if the board hadn't pushed it out early. Just the features cut from trailers alone, to say nothing of the trove of things left on the cutting room floor.

Deserved. They had the reputation before of being fantastic devs that only put out extremely high quality rpgs. They took advantage of that goodwill.

Great game 👍🏻

And that last 'Update' that lowered FPS by 6 to 10... thanks CD.

Ended being a sick game though. But thats the thing when it comes to investors, they dont give a damn. you produce the product or they pull out.

They're ok devs, hopefully they learn from their mistakes by their next release

But did they learn their lesson? Only time will tell.

Perhaps this is a lesson in not hyping the hell out of something before it's ready.

Serves them right for scamming people the way they did.

I wish they go bankrupt and their writers, who are the only good thing in that company, would find jobs elsewhere.

Somehow everyone keeps forgetting were the price was before the hype buildup..

Good time to buy before a new Witcher game comes out then I s'pose

Let's act like we are surprised

9 - 13 - 1987 1:14pm on a Sunday so - HA HA HA don't get mad when you see things made for me.

Ouch! This is a lesson to all game developers out there. Don't launch a game unfinished or this could happen to you.

It’s great now, and I hope more people get to experience what it has to offer. Although at launch it was a buggy mess and it should have been delayed. Any financial issues CDPR faces in the aftermath is their own fault

It's playable and super fun now... but it honestly hurt that half of the hype was based on fake gameplay that CDPR promoted. That was dishonest and spending my hard-earned money on products that aren't complete shouldn't be a norm.

Maybe next time don’t say “Yeah it runs GREAT on the PS4!”

You really don't know anything about stocks, don't you?

well when you release a game for a game console, make sure it runs on that console. It still doesn't work on my Xeon CPU, even after i cleared the specs. It flat lines every time. So i can't even play the game i paid for. even with 8 cores

It's a sad irony. CP2077 got pushed out too soon by greedy stockholders and then the stock tanked because it was shitty on old consoles (buggy but playable on PC). Which is a shame, because the game is gorgeous and fun on a modern system, there was a lot of love put into it.

Good time to get in, nowhere to go but up! I highly doubt they will make the same mistake again!

You reap what you sow, plain and simple.

Rough but it iz what it iz….

I guess thoses fucking suits that pushed it out the door too fast are regretting that now..... Gee its not like 15 other companies have done the same fucking thing and NOBODY HAS LEARNED THEIR LESSON YET.

When you get so big that all you can do is fail...

I really enjoyed Cyberpunk on PC . It ran great on my 2080 at the time and had very little bugs. It gets way more hate than it deserves imo. Really hoping for an expansion pack/dlc at some point.

They’ll bounce back. If there is a dev out there that can learn from what went wrong, it’s them. Hopefully 🤷‍♂️

Ifb😉

Big yikes. They kinda had it coming though. But I'm sure they'll be fine in any case. I just don't get the constant defense of CPR though? I played on PC and it was definitely trash compared to what was promised by them.

Is onder andere jullie schuld roepen dat games uit moeten komen wanneer ze nog niet klaar zijn 🖕

Deserved. Trash dev.

they deserved the hit; let them learn from the failure or if they continue the trash train let it crash

The majority who comment here never played the game or had it. Those who criticized the game were not gamers.

The sky is always falling with CDPR 🙄 People are just looking for reasons to wish the worst for them, it's pathetic. They'll be fine.

all they had to do was make cyberpunk third person and this wouldn't be a problem.

This doesn’t mean anything and is just meant to make CDPR look bad, the entire market is down and is worse than it’s ever been in 50 years…

Funny that Cyberpunk is one of the best games since 2018, with one of the best graphics with ray tracing on PC, since 2018 the best graphics games on PC I think are Red Dead Redemption, Cyberpunk 2077, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Doom Eternal, Metro Exodus, Days Gone, Hitman 3

Please don't tell me this means the end of gog

Well you hire keanu to carry a shitty game… yeah

Then EA should be bankrupt

Deserved. Make shit games, get shit results.

Great time to acquire them then. Is Sony in the running?

Shame. That game is amazing now

Almost every stock is worth a quarter of what it was before cyberpunk release

Karma

Good, they screwed pooch with cyberpunk and still havent got any meaningful content when Witcher 3 caliber content was promised. They seem to almost forgot about it now. I hate devs that string players along just to abandon.

I'm glad they have stuck with it to try and fix all the issues. However even then it wasn't even close to what was promised. It sucks because I was excited for yrs. I'm sure its fun on a top of the line pc but still not what it was supposed to be. Maybe one day.

Well yeah because the witcher was the only thing that they didn't fuck up on and lie to the fans about. But if I know anything of their most recent fuckup it'll turn out exactly the same seeing as it seems they haven't learned anything.

The only reason I'm not rooting for CD Projekt to go bankrupt is because they also own GOG, which happens to be the only store I don't mind paying for games on. That'll change if they drop the DRM-free model though, which looks like it might happen soon.

cyberpunk is good

A lot of bots in this thread saying it was actually good

The most annoying replies are from the 'I personally enjoyed Cyberpunk and chose to ignore all its flaws, so how DARE anyone criticize the game' crowd. Stop being so immature. You may have CDPR fanboy tunnelvision, but the rest of us have valid criticisms of CP2077. Accept it.

CD Projekt stock is worth a quarter of what it was before Cyberpunk 2077 released lol maybe next time they won't rush a game out lost a lot of good respect from fan's

I'm worried about The next Witcher, CDPR better don't go broke before it

They'll never get that reputation back. It's done now.

Slow news day?

That makes sense. They said Witcher 3 was the end of it but now they are hiring for money and are gonna have to eat that lol

This is what happens when you overhype a game. Too much marketing and promises… if they didn’t hype it so much people would not have had such big expectations. The game was great but not perfect.

This is hugely misleading...I played Cyberpunk for 2 hours then requested a refund but you can't go around saying the stock tanked because of the game...the whole market is down by 30-60%

Cyberpunk has an amazing story, although the combat is bit meh, I really like how interactive everything is. I just wish they spent more time on the game.

In fairness, they whole market has been down and we’re in a recession.

That'll probably be a hot mess too lol

Why do I see bloodyfasterTV when I look at the picture 🤔🤔🤔

Good. That’s what the execs deserve for fucking up the project with their corporate bs. Should have let the devs actually make the game properly.

Did they really believe lying to consumers & investors & releasing a dumpster fire worse than Anthem was going to benefit them? I mean, CyberpunkGame sold units & made profit (based on PROMISES) but now your entire brand & company is percieved as holistically untrustworthy🤦‍♂️

They fixed like 90% of cyberpunk tho, game's quite good now

Such a shame they favoured short term profit over their long term reputation. Cyberpunk is an awesome game now but regardless of the technical improvements the main story is laughably short and rushed.

Which is really sad because cyberpunk is fucking awesome and is in my top 10 games of all times. It crashed a few times. Was never “unplayable” for me. I think the good majority of people missed out on a great experience and never even bothered to play the game for themselves

Come and acquire them! Sony PlayStation

I'm mad that they are using Judy for this article and I couldn't get with her😭😭😭

Lol no thx

Cyberpunk is such a good game on pc. Even on next gen consoles it looks and plays really well. Definitely one of my favourite futuristic type games. As always with a cdpr game, storytelling is by far the best.

It's good now, and was decent for PC during launch. Everybody was rightfully upset that they rushed its launch when they hadn't worked out the remaining bugs. Definitely nowhere near as good as The Witcher 3, but still a good game.

serve them right

They will be fine. Yes, they fucked up with the release of cyberpunk. CDPR doesn't hide content behind paywalls or Microtransactions and that's a huge plus in gaming these days.

Sony need to acquire cd projects

Cyberpunk is fine. They’ve really stuck with it and that’s commendable. Can we just stop shitting on it for a while? If you don’t like it just go play some other games

So glad I passed on that game.

I plan to buy the GOTY edition of Cyberpunk 2077 in the next 3-4 years.l for $10. Seriously though, Cyberpunk pre-release reviews have made me swore to never trust a single video game reviewer out there ever again. God damn media people prostituted themselves.

It was fine on PC. I experienced very few bugs, it looked good, and ran well They should have never targeted the old consoles. The game was too ambitious to try and get it running on those netbook CPU's, weak GPU's, and slow storage

Cyperpunk one of the greatest RPGs of all time of the haters.

Cyber punk was a good game. Buy theu hyped it up too much. It did not live up to the hype though

Weren't the last two Witcher games released in a similarly bad state? Seems like they need to announce some 'internal restructuring' so this doesn't happen again.

and the new Witcher game will still be doo-doo since Geralt won't be in it.

Sony you know what to do

I love that everyone shits on cyberpunk. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even with all its bugs it’s still a very good game. People still play Bethesda games and imo they are way worse but wise than cdpr

Witcher 4 will take its time like it’s predecessor. Keep in mind when the game dropped at the height of the plandemic EVERY CORPORATION was affected. Ask Sony/Microsoft for their supposed “no stock” items. Still cannot walk In store to get next gens. “Chip shortage” *scoffs*

May be Witcher 1 Remastered or New Witcher series (Garelt's friends')

Kind of a shame. If it was released in the state that it is in today, it would at least have been regarded as decent, and not with the stigma of its horrendous release state. I'd gladly dive into a new Witcher game, trusting them fully though.

Deserved tbh

Cyberpunk 2077 probably could got Game of the Year if management didn't force to release it too soon. its actually a really good game

LegacyKillaHD

PaulTassi

Game had miles of hype that could not live up to anyones expectations. And Witcher 3 was very well planned out with it's design that had a story built around it.

Disney headed in the same direction.

Is the game any good?

I know who didn't lose money (as opposed to their employees whose stock incentives are worth jack now). The top dogs responsible for this mess. Simply disgraceful.

Hopefully they do learn from this and it wasn’t just empty words like the other companies say.

People shit on Cyberpunk but CDPR have been releasing broken games on release ever since the first Witcher. No one remembers week 1 Witcher 3?

obligatory disrespectful cyberpunk 2077 bashing article of the month? check

too ambitious it hit the ceiling.

It's kind of ironic that Techland might be Europe's biggest game company because I was actually more disappointed with DL2 than Cyberpunk

I have low expectations on this one

CDPR is dead and they killed themselves.

They need to redeem and redeem big time

It sucks they tried to limp out a last gen version. It's actually a pretty decent game.

And now they’ll rush to finish Witcher 4 to appease their stockholders. The cycle will never end.

Have they finish the game already? Or still on beta testing? Cyberpunk im talking about
