“We’re kind of busting at the seams,” said Christopher Rodriguez, the Woodlawn’s executive and artistic director. “As much as we love this area and this space, we were able to talk to the Wonderland of the Americas to see if we could work together. As soon as the Bijou vacated, we started having conversations, and we felt like it was going to be a perfect fit.”The community theater’s mission remains the same. It will continue producing musical theater.
“I always feel like everyone sees our shows, and that’s what we’re known for, but there’s so much more going on under the surface,” said Rodriguez, who has worked for the nonprofit since shortly after it was launched in 2012.The company will be renamed since it won’t be at the Woodlawn anymore, Rodriguez said.Renovations will be required to make the six-auditorium movie theater at Wonderland of the Americas ready for live performances and classes.
When the new space opens will depend on how swiftly the fundraising goes. Supply chain issues could conceivably also impact the project, Rodriguez said.
