One in five Irish pubs have called last orders since 2005 via IrishTimesBiz

Almost 5 per cent of pubs in the capital closed their doors for good between 2005 and 2021 compared with declines of more than 10 per cent in every other county. Photograph: Bryan O BrienSome 1,892 of Ireland’s pubs were permanently shuttered between 2005 and 2021, a decline of more than 21 per cent against a backdrop of changing lifestyles and higher taxes, an industry lobby group has said.

Laois was the most affected county, with over 30 per cent of pubs calling last orders for the final time over the period. Just 102 pub licences were not renewed in the year to the end of September 2021, a decline of just over 1 per cent. This figure may also be distorted by the impact of Government supports such as the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme and the Covid Restrictions Support Scheme.

And the prices they’re charging now are keeping people away

It’s the internet, people have big TV screens at home, video games,Spotify etc.cans are way cheaper, can smoke at home.Eating is cheaper there. Going to the pub is kinda boring( never thought I’d say that in my life)

Pub owners pushed for the minimum alcohol prices for supermarkets & off licence , thinking they’d never see a bad week again , the price of going out to a pub is ridiculous , a glass of wine costs more than what the pubs are paying for a bottle , hard to feel sorry for them

Or didn't even get the chance to call last orders but just closed quietly in the COVID darkness.

Your supposed to be a reporter. Learn how to spell.

*the impact of lockdowns

IrishTimes In a way this is a good thing - the Irish relationship with alcohol is toxic and unhealthy.
