Yep 'cost at scale' continues to be the biggest factor. Have similar issues with show drones and factory drones. Mind that anything involving a fleet. It gets very pricey since pros currently run drones like an airline company. Model needs to change.
Some time ago, I watched a clip of a gentleman in the U.K. place an order via his Amazon app. As the drone was flying to his address to deliver his order, it was also showing it's flight route. All went well; order was received. The package was quite small as was the drone.
We aren’t waiting. Right now, there’s no way to make that economical on multiple fronts. Cutting out FedEx, UPS, and the USPS is one of the first steps and they have just started that.
Nice in theory and pretty on paper but not a reality.

JeffBezos just approved a living wage for his employees after being shamed into it by SenSanders when amazon's apalling working conditions came to light. There are far more issues to work out before delivery drones should even be considered.
China uses autonomous car drones. More practical.

It was always just PR guff. It's not cost-effective and not even possible for most customers, given the rules around drone use in urban areas.
Probably not going to happen given the regulations, but Amazon likes to say things they want to do and if they can't, they move along to some other grand idea.

I'm not 100% sure why they want to. For some smaller packages for very out of the way places, they'd make sense. But for the majority of customers it'd be more of a novelty than anything else...
