Mark Liberson, a Market Days festival organizer and bar owner, poses for a portrait near the intersection of West Buckingham Place and North Halsted Street on Aug. 3, 2022, in Chicago.
The Northalsted Business Alliance, the organization that runs the festival, is working with health officials to push messaging about the disease during the festival, he said. The neighborhood’s concerted response to the monkeypox virus reminds him of its response to the AIDS epidemic. Festival organizers and public health officials are asking people exhibiting monkeypox symptoms, including undiagnosed rashes and mild flu-like symptoms, to not come to the festival, he added. Liberson thinks the virus is still containable.
Monkeypox can spread through direct or indirect contact with the virus’ painful, distinctive pimplelike rash. It most often spreads through sex. That could be a problem at Market Days, said Ald. Tom Tunney, 44th Ward.“It’s kind of a love fest,” said Tunney, who is gay and represents the area where the festival will occur.
“The first thing folks should know is that they can have a good time,” Hazra said. “There are ways to protect your health and still enjoy yourself.” Banners will be posted at gates, informational videos will be playing in bars and educators will be posted at entrances to answer questions and point people to resources. The city even got popular gay comedian Matteo Lane to make a public safety announcement on monkeypox for the festival, Arwady said.
“We’re trying to do as much education as possible for the people coming into town,” Martinez said. CircuitMOM Productions is sharing information on where people can get vaccinated across its website and social media, urging people with symptoms to not come to the party and telling guests who want to have sex that they will need to do so elsewhere.
There could be risks.
Gross
2 weeks of no orgies to stop the spread
Not really - most of us are not whoreing around like some kind of tragic statistic or stereotype/ the fear from covid -people will do any disturbing thing you tell them but don’t ever assume all of us care because some of us see through it -so shut up
At the onset of COVID, law enforcement was sent out to stop people from participating in things the government said were risky. Will this same approach be used again to stop the spread of Monkeypox?
The Northalsted folks again show their selfishness by having the event when the Cubs are home. The neighborhood will experience a two-day ChicagoTraffic jam. The fest could have been scheduled for August 13-14 when there's no baseball conflict. AldTomTunney JamesCappleman
Public health officials should cancel this party. Monkeypox is a national health emergency, there are not enough vaccine doses for every American. It is so irresponsible to be having more Pride events now, knowing they are Monkeypox superspreader events.
