UIF Commissioner Teboho Maruping outlines plans to train and employ young people, as well as to increase accommodation for students.

Youth unemployment in South Africa continues to rise. This is despite the most recent Quarterly Labour Force Survey , published by Stats SA. According to the country’s apex statisticians, 370, 000 jobs were gained between the final quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. The numbers show that youth unemployment numbers remain stubbornly high at 63,9% for those aged between 15 – 24 and 42.1% for those aged between 25 – 34.

The Tech Pozi project encourages young people who participate in it to form cooperatives they can own. For example, Tech Innovators Hub, a corporative based in the rural town of uMthatha operates as a business whilst receiving technical training. Through the corporative young people are trained in website design, installing satellite dishes and digital marketing. The youth that is participating in the tech Pozi project have been selected from the Employment Services of South Africa database.

Partnerships are very critical in addressing youth unemployment in our country, and that is why we have re-focussed the work of LAP away from just merely training, but insist on finding employment at the end of the training programme. This is the reason why we are only going to partner with entities that can guarantee employment of learners once we issue our call for proposals before the end of July this year.

Currently, Adowa has a 7,000-bed pipeline, under different stages of development and is located across the country including the Eastern Cape, the Western Cape, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Gauteng. For example, the six-storey EPSV building boasts uncapped Wi-Fi, furnished rooms with appliances, generators, security, laundry, cleaning, study areas and gaming rooms to name a few.
