The Spotted Lanternfly is an invasive plant hopper native to southeastern Asia. It’s currently a problem in northern American states and there are fears it will cross the border.
It hasn’t has been detected in Canada yet, but the lanternfly has an appetite for grape vines which could threaten Niagara area wine producers. “It’s a worry. They eventually will be here,” said Debbie Zimmerman, CEO of the Grape Growers of Ontario. The adult insect feeds a variety of plants, but grape vines are a preferred host which the lanternfly can attack en masse.
“If this species continues to establish itself in the United States and spreads to Canada, it could be a formidable threat to various industries and the economy – of special concern for the fruit orchard and grape product industries,” according to Ontario’s Invasive Species Centre.Article content
