Business owners might be tempted to hand out impressive job titles to recruit talent. Here's why the move could backfire in the long run.

Adams said potential employees can also sniff out an inflated job title in an online job posting, which could deter some people from applying. Meanwhile, what employees really don't like in job listings includeSo what should business owners be doing to attract talent? “By setting expectations and including talking about the challenging aspects of the role, some people will run from that, but some people will find meaning in that,” Adams said. “It’s not easy but why should it be easy? If you can’t offer big salaries, offer clarity and confidence and be very clear with what people find in the role.”

“It’s very easy to just tacitly to reach for the nearest life jacket of 'let's give people retention bonuses' or 'let's give them a better title.' These are all short-lived sticking plasters. Just start with the bedrock foundation of understanding who your organization is and the basic proposition of what you have to offer,” Adams said.
