Among the more notable recent M&A deals was Smart Global Holdings Inc.'s $225 million purchase of Stratus Technologies Inc. A Massachusetts company, Stratus offers small computers and software that are designed to manage factories and other industrial operations.

Based in Newark and traditionally a computer memory maker, Smart is becoming a kind of technology conglomerate, amassing a collection of different products and brands. Last year, for example, it bought Cree Inc.'s LED lighting products business.Foster City, $50 million: Novo Holdings led the round for developer of immunotherapy treatments for cancer and genetic treatments for diabetes and other diseases.
